Ethos UP Rotors

Two rotors, offering both high-pressure and high-throughput capabilities, are available for the ETHOS UP. The SK-15 high-pressure rotor offers maximum flexibility and is suitable for virtually all applications. The MAXI-44 high-throughput rotor is recommended for more routine applications including environmental and clinical.

Both SK-15 and MAXI-44 rotors feature Milestone’s patented ‘vent-and-reseal’ technology (US Patent 5,270,010) to control the pressure of all vessels with complete safety.

SK-15 High Pressure Rotor

The SK-15 high-pressure rotor can accommodate up to 15 vessels and offers the analyst the most applications flexibility. The SK-15’s high temperature (300°C) and pressure (100 bar) capabilities ensure a high quality digestion of even the most difficult and reactive samples.

A large selection of high purity quartz and TFM inserts are available for the SK-15 rotor for smaller sample amounts or to minimize the dilution factor of the analytical solution.

Maxi-44 High Throughput Rotor

The MAXI-44 is recommended for laboratories looking to maximize throughput. The rotor accommodates up to 44 vessels and is suitable for easy to moderate applications such as clinical, environmental and food.

The MAXI-44 is fully controlled via a contactless infrared (IR) sensor that controls the temperature of each vessel. This result is an easy-to-use rotor that ensures maximum safety and digestion quality.

The MAXI-44 complies with commonly used standard methods, such as the US EPA 3015, 3051, and 3052.

Medium/High Pressure Rotors

These segmented-type rotors are designed to the highest safety standards and offer unmatched performance for difficult samples requiring high pressure and temperature. Heavy duty rotor construction and TFM vessels. Vessel size: 100mL. Accepts micro-sampling inserts for handling of small samples and for ultratrace analysis.

The SK-10 is a high pressure rotor that holds 10 samples and the SK-12 is a medium pressure rotor that holds 12 vessels. The flexibility and wide application coverage of the SK rotors makes them the most commonly used rotors with the ETHOS UP.

Typical applications: Suitable for every application up to and including difficult organic materials such as hydrocarbons and polymers, and refractory inorganic materials.

Twister Vessel Handling Module

The Twister Vessel Handling Module automates the process of assembly and disassembly of digestion vessels, featuring an electric motor to tighten and release vessel caps. Twister is designed for use with SK-10 and SK-12 vessels, and reduces the labor required to prepare a run for digestion. Twister has a built-in exhaust system which is connected to the lab exhaust system for removal of acid vapors.

Medium Pressure, High Throughput Rotors

The PRO system uniquely combines medium pressure with high throughput and can hold up to 24 75mL TFM vessels. The PRO vessels are very easy to handle: capping is by hand with no tools needed, and an indicator in the cap confirms the cap has been tightened correctly. The rotor’s flexible design allows both a 16 and 24 position capacity. The PRO rotor has a max. pressure of 30 bar, which means it meets the pressure requirements of US EPA Methods 3015A, 3052, and 3051.

Typical application: High throughput labs running environmental and organic samples. The medium pressure capability of the PRO rotor is a benefit for samples such as soils and sludges, while its higher capacity compared to the 10 or 12 position high pressure rotors makes it more productive.

High Temperature Rotor

Another example of Milestone’s leadership in rotor technology is the NOVA-8 high temperature rotor, which is able to withstand extremely high temperatures – up to 280°C – for long periods, allowing for the complete digestion of the most challenging samples.

The NOVA-8 holds 8 vessels and combines breakthrough twin shielding vessel technology (ceramic and high-performance polymer shields) with a construction optimized for free air flow and fins for optimum cooling. An innovative external safety shield improves insulation, further enhancing the overall safety of the system while new, high-performance polymeric materials resist thermal softening and deformation, extending vessel lifetime. The NOVA-8 was the first ever rotor capable of digesting refractory samples.

Typical application: Very difficult inorganic materials such as silicon carbide, metal oxides, geological, and refractory materials.

Microwave Open Digestion Rotor

The ETHOS UP is easily converted into an open vessel digestion system with the MOD-8 rotor. The MOD-8 can hold up to 8 samples in 250mL glass or quartz vessels, with IR temperature control on every vessel for maximum reaction control and reproducibility. The entire rotor is composed of ultrapure PTFE, to minimize contamination. Each vessel is individually connected to an automated dispensing system, giving precise control over the addition of acid to each sample, and is fitted with a separately connected vacuum exhaust line, preventing any cross contamination.

The vessel exhaust lines are connected to the VAC-4000 high efficiency acid scrubber module, which collects and neutralizes acid vapors during the digestion run via an all-PTFE vacuum pump. A vacuum sensor built into the ETHOS UP ensures microwave heating is only applied when the exhaust system is in operation. A water cooled PTFE condenser collects the condensed acid vapors into a PFA/PTFE collecting bottle (with up to 90% efficiency).

Fusion Rotor

Another Milestone innovation – fusion sample preparation by microwave. The MultiFAST-4 module quickly and easily converts the ETHOS UP into a fusion sample prep system, simultaneously processing up to 4 samples in standard fusion crucibles placed within silicon carbide heating crucibles. Since silicon carbide couples very well with microwave energy, the MultiFAST-4 can reach 1,000°C in around 8 minutes, faster than any traditional fusion technique. TEMP-SURE software plots the temperature each crucible in real time, giving full control of the process. The melt can be poured into a mold to a bead for measurement by XRF, or cooled and dissolved for solution analysis by ICP-OES.

Typical application: Solid samples such as cement, ore, slag, rocks, ceramics, pigments, and glasses prior to analysis by XRF or ICP-OES.
